Project Influence
Overview
Project Influence is a genre-blending scripted series concept built for a cross-platform audience — a show with hidden layers that viewers can only access through a companion digital ecosystem. Not ARG, not just a podcast, not just a show: a single narrative expressed across multiple surfaces simultaneously.
ROL co-created the concept and led all technical direction, defining the cross-platform architecture and the systems that would let audiences influence actual story progression.
The project is currently in development.
Problem / Brief
The brief started as a straightforward scripted series concept. What became interesting was the question of what the digital layer could actually do — not just supplement the show, but structurally change it.
The design constraint we set ourselves: every platform layer had to be meaningful on its own. The podcast companion had to be worth listening to without watching the show. The app had to be worth using by people who had never seen an episode. The e-commerce component — real goods tied to the show's fictional world — had to make sense as products independent of the narrative.
The audience influence mechanic was the hardest problem. How do you build a system where audience participation genuinely changes the story without creating a production nightmare or losing narrative coherence?
We designed the audience participation system to feel consequential without requiring the writers to hand over the wheel.
Approach
The cross-platform architecture treats the show's narrative as a graph — episodes, story beats, and character arcs as nodes, with edges representing the dependencies between them. The audience influence system can shift which paths through the graph the production takes, within constraints defined by the writers.
The companion app is designed as the primary surface for audience engagement. It surfaces narrative clues, gates community content behind discovery mechanics, and feeds aggregated audience signals to the production team in a form they can actually act on.
The e-commerce layer is designed around objects from the show's fictional world — physical goods that carry narrative meaning. The product catalog expands as the story progresses, and some products are only available to viewers who have reached certain story milestones.
Outcome
Project Influence is in active concept development. The cross-platform architecture is defined and the pilot concept is in early development.
ROL continues to lead technical direction as the project moves toward production.
